New Wilderness

Power lines draw an arch ‘cross the sky as red and rusty as blood.
From the backseat I could theorize all those things to come.
But beneath the pines, we committed the crime of being much too young
To realize we had time on our side, but now that’s over and done.
On fire escapes the whole city shakes as the air fills with dust
It’s not hard to see that when we breathe it’s much too dangerous
But you said to me that you had to leave and I said well if you must.
But don’t expect me to ever grieve for the ending of us.
The distance is getting further each day.
The memories are starting to fade.
The distance is getting further each day.
The memories are starting to fade.

Black Maria

Turning slowly towards the sun, to look back on all you’ve done.
Tar-paper covered walls couldn’t contain it all.
Oh, Black Maria x2
Beacon of the Garden State. The whole world illuminates.
Pictures of butterflies and Ghost Dance before our eyes.
Oh, Black Maria x2
You built the lights that burned out the night
And you made the waves that crackle and fade.
Oh, Black Maria x3

10 Year Drought
04:27

Hail to the rain, and to the day that we walk away.
And we’ll celebrate our escape from this empty place.
Hail to the snow, and to the glow after the show.
And what we think we’re owed, it won’t cover what we don’t know.
Here’s to the age of, never giving up.
But this is the year of, more the same.
Hail to the hail, the times we fail, the times we don’t succeed.
Further up the trail we’ll discover where we’re meant to be.
Here’s to the age of, never giving up.
But this is the year of, more the same.

Shut Your Mouth

So close you can feel it when they turn their backs.
I know excuses they don’t make up for facts.
And they’ll do it again. It’s just too easy to...
Come on, hang on to the things you never had and my attention.
Come on, hang on to the things that make you sad and my affection.
You said no love song would ever do, so I wrote this one for you.
But you’re not even listening, and there’s just too many to...
Come on, hang on to the things you never had and my attention.
Come on, hang on to the things that make you sad and my affection.
It’s starting to sink in, what we’re up against, what we’re up against.
It’s starting to sink in, the ones that we call friends, the ones that we call…

Tracers
03:33
|
|||
Make me, don’t tell me when to smile.
Maybe that’s just not our style.
But if we don’t meet your gaze, we’re the ones who have to pay.
What do you believe? Who are you to tell us how and where to be?
We already occupy this space. No exclusions. This time you have been traced.
What are you afraid of, my sweet side?
If we don’t fit your definitions, you denigrate us and cover it with lies.
What do you believe? Who are you to tell us how and where to be?
We already occupy this space. No exclusions. This time you have been traced.

I’m waking up from sleeping. I didn’t dream that you were keeping,
A place for me next you, so now we’re one, when we were (two/too)
Afraid to turn on the lights and see what kind of horrors might
Be waiting there under our beds, we pulled the covers to our heads but
Now, the sun shines through the shades,
And we both awake, to find, that we were always okay.
So we’ll dance as the stereo sings songs of love, and loss, and hope.
And try to act like visionaries living beyond binary
Systems like, wrong and right, and us and them, and day and night
I count the stars in your eyes and in your arms I realize that
Now, the sun shines through the shades,
And we both awake, to find, that we were always okay.
I don’t wanna go to sleep again, ‘cause I am already dreaming.
And now, the sun shines through the shades,
and we both awake, to find, that we were always okay.

From the legion halls to the liquor stores,
And the shopping malls to the reservoir,
We are all searching for more, but we won’t find a single thing tonight.
And the parking lot, pay phones,
And the gas station to the mobile homes,
We just want some place to go, but there’s no where that we belong tonight.
Yes I am aware that there is no reason,
But I’ll never know completion.
And I’m lousy with your best intentions,
And these secrets, I’ll surely tell.
From the legion halls, to the liquor stores.

Between the Lines
04:16
|
|||
You’re up against another incline,
But you’ve already resigned
To prove yourself, that you’re divine
But no one here is too surprised,
By your blighted courage or the fear in your eyes,
And they’ll encourage you to not even try.
So you attempt to cover your crimes,
And desperately to memorize
Your stories and your alibis,
But you know that they’re a lie,
That you tell yourself so you can sleep at night,
And keep from feeling petrified.
And what we’ve found, is where we draw the line, it changes all the time.
And we are bound, to these intersecting lives, it’s yours and theirs and mine.
So now it’s up to you to decide,
Whether to run and hide,
Or face those things that you despise
In yourself and realize,
That they won’t just stand by, while you try to make up your mind.
What we’ve found, is where you draw the line, it changes all the time.
And we’re still bound, to these intersecting lives, it’s yours and theirs and mine.

St. Anne
03:48
|
|||
The rain will remain, until you’re old, older than this.
You say to yourself, “Something seems askew and amiss.”
These calendar pages go on for ages and years
I know it’s not what you would hear
Oh Anne I know you’re growing up.
And it never feels near enough.
You’ve made exceptions & concessions out of hand.
It’s not too hard to understand.
Silent armies marching in the streets,
Roll over everyone they meet.
But we’ve gotta take that chance,
So that we can dance to the beat.
We’ve lost the forest for the trees.
That someday will rule everything.

Red, red red sweater, someone pulled the thread
Unread letter, something left unsaid
Your so clever, I was so misled
I knew better, but you got in my head
…
We’re finally letting go, we’re leaving it behind
Out here on our own. Unknown and undefined
We’re waiting on a sign. We’re laughing with our friends
We’re buried by the sound. We hope it never ends
…
Let’s stay here till this make sense
Build a brand-new monument
To the strange and the mundane
The panoply of existence.
Let’s slow down and take our time
Settle up in our minds
And try to feel something real
For the rest of our lives.

Permafrost
05:17
|
|||
You speak and spell numbers and letters well
You go away forever and a day
I know, I’m sure you’ve heard this all before
It always sounds the same.
You’re like the ocean tide
You leave everything behind
And I can’t decide
If it’s all by design
Winters return, you’d think someday I’d learn to
To go to sleep, to make the most of things and
I know, I’m lost. This life is permafrost and
It barely melts at all.
You’re like the open sea
You break too easily
And it’s all tragedy
When you’re next to me.
You’re never just okay
You’re never just alright

The yearbook portrait photographer, just can’t understand.
Her fine art degree in photography hasn’t turned out like she planned.
She goes around from school to school taking pictures of mathletes, the jocks and the cool kids and the band geeks and faculty too.
It’s unfulfilling but what can she do? She has to make a living.
The yearbook portrait photographer, spends most of her days,
Wondering how all the plans that she made seem to go so astray.
She sits alone in her studio and remembers the dreams of gallery shows,
Pulitzer prizes and exhibitions, but now she has this sinking suspicion she isn’t truly the living.
But what she can’t see, is what her pictures mean.
In purses and wallets and Christmas cards send to distant relations afar,
And passed between high school lovers that write on the backs, “Have a great summer!”
It’s all lost on her.
